Things You'll Need:
- Building supplies
- Safety goggles
- Circular saw
- Basic tool kit
- Chalk line
-
Step 1
Check for any needed building permits before beginning the project.
-
Step 2
Decide on the design of the freestanding deck. There are many options available, and basic design styles can be found online. This is a good time to pick up the rest of the needed decking supplies.
-
Step 3
Take the deck measurements to a home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. One of their professionals can assist in getting the appropriate amount of lumber, and can even cut it to size.
-
Step 4
Mark out the freestanding deck's layout with string.
-
Step 5
Dig holes with a posthole digger, making them one foot deep. Insert concrete tube forms for the deck footing, being sure to leave an inch or so above the ground level. Use a level to make sure they are even.
-
Step 6
Mix 60-pound concrete to hold the post anchors at the tops of the tube forms. One bag of concrete per tube is the usual ratio. After letting the concrete cure, insert the post anchors. Make sure the anchors are positioned correctly by using a board to check.
-
Step 7
Set the beams into the post anchors. Fasten rim joists at the beam ends. Add angle brackets for even more corner joint support.
-
Step 8
Use joist hangers to attach 2 by 6 joists to the beam faces.
-
Step 9
Install the decking on top of the joists in a perpendicular fashion. Use deck screws to attach the decking.
-
Step 10
Trim any excess wood off the ends after putting all of the decking in place. Snap a chalk line to ensure a straight cut.
-
Step 11
Stain the freestanding deck.
