How to Pick a Site for a Deck

Many home improvement projects include a deck for enjoying the outdoors in good weather. Picking a site for a deck involves considering the uses of the deck, who will be using the deck, and how the deck will complement existing structures on the property. It takes a little thought to choose a spot to put your backyard deck.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Find existing property lines and zoning laws. You don't want to construct anything that will be in violation of any ordinance or beyond your rightful property.
Step2
Decide on an estimated size and shape for your deck. This will help you look for spaces to accommodate the deck.
Step3
Think about the yard. Avoid planning a deck in an area that would obstruct movement through your yard. Make your deck as unobtrusive as possible within the grand design.
Step4
Think about quiet rooms in the house. Locate your deck away from private or quiet rooms, so that deck noise does not affect those places in the house.
Step5
Find a proper grade. Pick a spot for your deck that will not require a lot of earth-moving or other costly practices.

Tips & Warnings

  • Think about adding safety features to your deck. Is the deck higher than a few feet above the ground? Will children, seniors, or small pets be accessing the deck? An eye on safety can prevent accidents later.
  • DON'T construct a "load-bearing" deck. Buyers of old homes are disgusted when they find that a builder actually constructed a room above a deck space. This creates problems when it's time to renovate the home. Keep your deck an outdoor facility unencumbered by indoor structures.
