When a wall looks boring and you really want to change the look, brick or stone can give your wall an exciting, trendy appearance. A number of different kinds of lightweight brick veneer are available. You can determine what kind of veneer to use by looking at the surface where the veneer will be placed. This installation can be a great weekend project.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the condition of the surface with a paint test. Stick on a piece of masking tape and pull it off to see if the paint adheres to the surface of the tape.

  2. Step 2

Discover the amount of moisture that gathers on the wall by taping a piece of plastic over an area. If there is an accumulation of moisture after 24 hours, then you will have to apply a new base, such as a metal grid or sheetrock, on which to apply the brick veneer.

  3. Step 3

Clean the surface well. Make sure that all loose dirt and dust is removed and that the surface is dry before you apply the stones or brick.

  4. Step 4

Apply the adhesive evenly beginning at the top of the wall. You can complete an area that is about two-feet by four-feet without worrying about it drying too quickly. You want it to feel tacky.

  5. Step 5

Run a line to give you a level field on which to lay the bricks. Starting at the top, press the bricks onto the surface, using the line as a guide. Leave about 3/8 inches between each brick. Fill in with mortar-looking filler to give a natural brick look.

  6. Step 6

Use a small brush or the tip of a caulking tube to fill in the spaces between the brick with mortar or a mortar-like caulk. Be sure to wipe off any mortar that has spread onto the brick surface before it dries.

  7. Step 7

Finish the entire wall with a sealer. Use a high gloss or clear sealer, depending on the look you want to achieve and how dirty the wall will become. A higher, tougher sealer will make it easier to clean walls in high traffic areas.
