A wiki is a site that you or other browsers can change. You can start a wiki on a certain topic that interests you and allow others to edit it, adding or changing information.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search for wiki hosting sites using your Internet browser and favorite search engine. Decide whether you want to start something from scratch and code it yourself or find a host site to do the code for you and give you a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) typing format.

  2. Step 2

Compare free sites such as WetPaint and Wikispaces. These free hosting sites are great for classrooms, workgroups, families, sports teams and book and fan clubs. Many free sites also offer a paid subscription with more features, but the free wikis are fine for most users.

  3. Step 3

Look at paid subscription host sites such as EditMe, ProjectLocker and Socialtext. These sites offer, with your payment, dedicated servers and business and commercial assistance, meaning you have almost unlimited space, less chance of accidental deletion of your information and more control over the information and who has the ability to change it.

  4. Step 4

Check to see the amount of space your host site allows you before you commit to the wiki host, especially if you are paying for it. If you are creating a small wiki you plan to share with family, friends or a small group, you may not need more than 2 GB of space to store text, photos and videos.

  5. Step 5

See how many users your wiki host site allows. Many wiki hosts allow unlimited users, so you can have as many people as you want add to the information on your site. Others are registration based and only allow a certain number. If this matters to you, check it out before you buy.

on 7/9/2008 You can also use a hosted Wiki service, like Intodit. Intodit.com is a free service where you can create a group for your interests the Wiki way. You can share your passion by building pages or starting discussions for your group. An easy to use editing system makes it possible to add text content, photos and widgets such as movies or music clips.
