How to Build Pens for Fainting Goats

Fainting goats have good natures, which contributes to their popularity. They are fairly easy to care for, and they don't jump and climb like other breeds. These goats periodically "faint" due to a hereditary muscle condition. Goats are used for their milk, meat and their coats. They also make great pets. Since they don't need a lot of room, building a small pen with shelter will suit them just fine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Call your local extension office to learn more about fainting goats and their needs.
Step2
Determine what size pen you'll need based on the number of fainting goats you will keep.
Step3
Decide where you will put your fainting goat pen. A small corner of the yard would be acceptable. They don't need a lot of space to thrive, but a fence should be used to keep the goats from wandering.
Step4
Use natural shelter such as trees during grazing season. You may also use existing sheds. Your climate and the time of year will affect how much shelter your goats need.
Step5
Keep your goats out of the cold in the winter. You'll need a separate pen for kidding and lactating goats. Also keep in mind that they need a safe place to protect them from natural predators.
Step6
Store feed, bedding and other equipment separately in a small shed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your goats safe from predators. Building fences and shelters will help.
  • Dogs, donkeys and llamas can help keep predators at bay.
