How to Save Time When Sewing

Sewing can be a relaxing pastime but, with increasingly hectic schedules, it becomes harder to find the time. Whether you sew for fun or only because it's necessary, you are sure to enjoy these time saving tips. In fact, with a few small adjustments in organization, you may even find yourself with time left to spare.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Designate a sewing area. Find a small area in your home where you can set up your sewing machine and leave it. You can eliminate the time you normally use to pack and unpack by converting an unused closet into a sewing room or screening off a small corner of a large room.

  2. Step 2

Buy it all at once. When buying fabric for a new outfit or project, buy everything you need at once in order to avoid unnecessary trips to the store later.

  3. Step 3

Keep it nearby. Place your hand-sewing in a decorative basket either by the phone or your favorite chair. You can then chat with your friends or watch television while getting a few hems and buttons done, as well.

  4. Step 4

Press and go. Garment pieces must be pressed as you go, but you may find it easier to collect a few pieces and press them all at one time. Remember, though, never sew across a seam unless it has first been pressed.

  5. Step 5

Sew interrupted. If you are interrupted just as you're ready to press garment pieces, set them aside and iron along with your regular ironing. Then, when you have some free time to sew, your pieces will be ready.

  6. Step 6

Make a sewing apron. Be sure to include pockets and wear while sewing or mending. You can tape a cloth tape measure to the hem for a quick rule and store your mending equipment in the pockets.

on 1/11/2008 The sewing apron is a super idea! We use catch-alls & tool totes for other hobbies and crafts to make things accessible while working on projects; so obviously, a "sewing apron" is a great handy idea to keep things out-of-the-way but ready at a 'hands' reach'. Thanks for the logical idea.
