Washing one dish at the end of the day isn't an overwhelming task, but washing a sink full of dishes everyday can become frustrating. If you live by yourself, or if you have a family of 5, there are a few simple ways to reduce the amount of dishes you need to wash. It is just a matter of changing your habits to start washing fewer dishes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Rinse glasses out after each use and set them aside. You don't have to use a new glass or wash it every time you get a drink, just wash it at the end of the day.

  2. Step 2

Reuse dishes that don't need to be scrubbed. You can brush bread crumbs off of a plate and put another sandwich on it rather than using another clean plate.

  3. Step 3

Buy paper plates to use at lunchtime or for casual dinners. Peanut butter and jelly doesn't need to be served on china; disposable plates will do.

  4. Step 4

Assign children a cup and bowl for the day, and all snacks and drinks must be served in them. Children have a way to accumulating bowls, plates and cups throughout the day, so limiting them to one of each per day significantly reduces the amount of dirty dishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Washing fewer dishes is not only convenient for you, it helps conserve water and energy.
  • If you are hand washing dishes, turn off the water in between washing and rinsing. If you are using a dishwasher, only run the dishwasher when it is full. These simple rules will help you conserve water and energy and probably save a little money at the same time.

Fewer dishes, not less.
Fewer is used with countable nouns: people, animals, chairs, shoes.
Less is used for uncountable, usually abstract nouns: money, happiness, snow, idealism. (Less is also used with adjectives and adverbs)

Just remember that if the noun can be preceded by a number (one person, three dogs, six of us, nineteen problems), it should be modified with fewer. Otherwise, less is best.
