With most brickwork projects there will come a time when you'll need to cut a brick to size. A bricklayer's hammer is the perfect tool for that job. It's lightweight and easy to carry, plus it trims quickly and allows you to get back to your project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Draw a line to mark where you want to cut the brick. Use a ruler to keep the line strait and mark all sides of the brick.

  2. Step 2

Score the brick with the chisel end of the bricklayer's hammer. Use small, repeated taps--anything more will prematurely break the brick. Score each side of the brick to weaken the breaking point and make a clean break more likely.

  3. Step 3

Hold the brick flat in your hand. Strike the brick with the bricklayer's hammer. It should break cleanly along the scored line.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 if the brick doesn't break.

  5. Step 5

Smooth the cut edge of the brick using the bricklayer's hammer. This step is essential to keep your project from toppling over time.

Tips & Warnings
  • A bricklayer's hammer can also trim stone to size. Simply use the chisel end of the hammer to whittle away the desired bit of stone.
  • During the scoring process, advanced masons hold the brick in one hand while striking it with the other. If you attempt this technique, hold the brick with your fingers and keep your palm away from the breaking point. You will avoid any pinching this way.
  • Wear safety glasses when using a bricklayer's hammer to protect your eyes. Also wear gloves to protect you hands.
