How to Prevent a Power Outage

A power outage happens when there is a loss of power to a home, business establishment or any place that uses power in daily living. Storms, accidents and faulty equipment contribute to outages. Power outages in homes come when there is an excessive amount of appliances plugged into one outlet. Are there ways to prevent power outages?

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Control how many appliances that you plug into one outlet. If electrical cords look like some game configuration, there's a good chance you have too many cords plugged into one power source.
Step2
Purchase a surge protector and plug in multiple cords such as desktop computers and printers.
Step3
Buy a generator. Depending on the brand, a portable generator for the home retails from $500 to over $2,000.
Step4
Purchase a battery adapter for laptops.
Step5
Protect outdoor electrical equipment. If you see anyone abusing equipment, even inadvertently, such as a gardener with a weed whacker, or a group of kids around power lines, contact the utility company or the police as needed.
Step6
Reduce your reliance on electricity. This is difficult to do, especially when the temperature is 100 degrees. The more we conserve electricity use, the more we will have.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep blinds and/or curtains closed on the side of the house or building where the sun shines to prevent the area from becoming too hot.
  • Avoid using a generator unless you install a bypass switch. If you do use the switch without doing this, you risk powering a downed line.
