A wrap skirt is one of the simplest and most versatile items for the beginning sewer to make. A wrap skirt can be made to be worn as a casual pool-side sarong or as a formal skirt to wear on a special night out.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure yourself to determine the length of fabric you will need. First, measure yourself from the waist to your ankle. This will be the width of fabric you need. Next, measure around your waist. Double this number and add two inches to acquire the length of fabric needed.

  2. Step 2

Lie out the piece of fabric on the floor. Cutting this length of fabric is too difficult on a table, so clear a bit of floor space for easier cutting. Cut the fabric in a gradual line so that on one end you have the measurement determined from waist to ankle, and on the other end you have 14 inches.

  3. Step 3

Take the extra material and cut two pieces that measure 2 1/2 inches by 12 inches. Fold the pieces in half with the right side in and iron a crease. With your sewing machine, hem the pieces along three edges with a zigzag stitch. Turn the pieces right side out and press to make your wrap skirt ties.

  4. Step 4

Hem along the two vertical edges of your wrap skirt. It's best to press the hem before sewing for a perfect edge. Next, hem along the long cut edge to finish the bottom of the wrap skirt.

  5. Step 5

Make the waistband of the skirt by pressing in one inch of fabric and pinning a tie to each end. Press in again one inch and sew the hem, reinforcing around the ties.

  6. Step 6

Wrap the skirt around your waste and tie together at the hip. Presto, you have made a simple yet beautiful new wrap skirt.
