Expand your work area while working on roofs or gutters by utilizing a ladder stabilizer, also known as a ladder stand-off. Attach a stabilizer to your open rung extension or sectional ladder and protect your windows and gutters while you perform necessary maintenance and repair. A ladder stabilizer allows you to work safely in hard-to-reach areas by keeping the ladder from leaning against fragile windows and gutters.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pliers and screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set
  1. Step 1

Ensure your ladder stabilizer, or stand-off, has a protective non-slip surface on its extension legs. If necessary, purchase protective coverings to increase adhesion to the side of your house and to prevent ladder movement.

  2. Step 2

Place your ladder on the ground and begin to attach your tension ladder stabilizer. Compress each end of the stabilizer and slip it through your ladder rung holes on each side of the ladder. Release the tension and allow the angles of the ladder stabilizer to secure the device to your ladder. Extend your ladder and place it against your elevated work surface. Lower the ladder when you complete your task. Compress the stabilizer. Remove it from the openings on the side of the ladder.

  3. Step 3

Insert safety pins and secure the bolts when using a pin-lock ladder stabilizer. Follow the instructions that come with your stabilizer and use the mounting hardware provided. Purchase only replacement parts that are made for your brand of ladder stabilizer, or stand-off.

  4. Step 4

Install an adjustable stabilizer to your ladder. Use a pair of pliers and a screwdriver or a socket wrench. To ensure maximum safety, tighten all bolts before using your adjustable stabilizer. Lower your ladder when adjusting the stand-off distance of your stabilizer.

  5. Step 5

Attach your stabilizer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions before beginning any roofing work. Position your stabilizer firmly and properly against the work surface to ensure a safe working environment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your ladder must comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration Code requirements.
  • Always utilize safe ladder practices to prevent falls and other injuries.
  • Never extend a ladder past its' intended range.
