Varicose veins, also known as spider veins, plague at least 50 percent of women. Varicose veins are small veins close to the skin and are very noticeable. One way to help diminish these is to have schlerotherapy. This procedure does help many women feel more confident and beautiful.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Plan to spend 15 to 45 minutes at your schlerotherapy session.
Step2
Change into shorts so your legs can be examined by the doctor, who will most likely want to take pictures of your legs for documentation.
Step3
Allow the doctor to clean your legs with antiseptic cleaner. The doctor will then pull your skin tight to expose the varicose veins.
Step4
Receive one injection of the schlerotherapy agent in your vein for each inch of vein that requires treatment. A cotton ball compress will be applied to the injection site following the injection.
Step5
Wear support hose for 72 hours after treatment. Bruising may last up to one month after treatment.
Step6
Move your legs to prevent blood clots, but do not overdo it with exercise. You should not do any weight lifting exercises or any other heavy lifting for a while.

Tips & Warnings

  • The best candidates for varicose vein schlerotherapy treatmen are women from 30 to 60 years old.
  • If you feel you need another schlerotherapy treatment, you will have to wait at least one month to let your body heal and rest. After each treatment your veins will appear smaller and less noticeable.
  • As with any medical procedure you should make sure the person you go to has all the necessary training. You should also discuss all the benefits and risks with your health care provider before you make any decisions.
  • You should not have this procedure done if you are prone to infection, if you have an aspirin allergy or if you have a history of blood clots.
