1
Stop smoking immediately if you haven't done so already. Chronic bronchitis is most commonly associated with smoking, so do yourself and everyone around you a favor and stop.
-
2
Avoid shouting, crying and over exertion if these activities trigger coughing episodes. Often remaining calm and quiet is the best way to avoid coughing spasms.

3
Stay away from cough suppressants as they just make the bronchitis worse. You need expectorants that loosen mucus and help you cough secretions up. If your cough is keeping you awake at bedtime, take just enough to quiet it down for a few hours but avoid it during the day to help promote productive coughing.
-
4
Wear a mask if you're exposed to an area with heavy air pollution or allergens. These pollutants can irritate your lungs and make the condition worse.
-
5
Use a humidifier at home as the warm moist air will help reduce coughing and loosen mucus. Be sure to clean the machine regularly so that bacteria doesn't become a problem.
-
6
See a respiratory therapist to begin a treatment program that will help you exercise and strengthen your lungs. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are very effective in helping patients deal with bronchitis and other lung conditions.
