Located in zoos or large nature habitats, an aviary, or bird sanctuary, creates an authentic environment for wildlife. Aviaries can be registered with state or federal government as a wildlife habitat if they meet certain criteria. If you live in a rural community and your backyard doubles as a sanctuary for birds, particularly endangered birds, consider registering it as an aviary with your state or a wildlife organization.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify the birds and other animals in your garden or backyard for your register. Keep track of butterflies, squirrels and other creatures that inhabit your backyard along with birds. The more creatures who live in your backyard or on your patio, the better chance you have of certifying it as an aviary.

  2. Step 2

Contact your local wildlife organization (the National Wildlife Federation, for example) and ask for advice about registering an aviary. Call the Parks and Wildlife Department on your state for details. Some states require that your habitat contain certain types of plants and birds when you register your aviary.

  3. Step 3

Look for vines, trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants that provide nectar for birds. Existing vegetation contributes to the continued healthy environment for birds and other creatures and gives them a constant food supply.

  4. Step 4

Pinpoint the four habitat basics-food,water, nesting places and cover. If your aviary provides these necessities for birds and other creatures, your aviary will qualify for registration in most states.

  5. Step 5

Fill out the necessary paperwork to register your aviary. Most states and nature organizations have downloadable forms on their websites.
