The proper disposal of pesticides is regulated by both state and federal laws. Pesticides should be stored properly and disposed of properly to provide safety for the consumer and the environment. Half of the deaths caused by pesticides each year occur in children under the age of 10. Here are some helpful tips for disposing of pesticides safely.

  1. Step 1

    Read the labels. Since the pesticides are regulated, the label is the law.

  2. Step 2

    Wear protective clothing and gear such as goggles or respirators as recommended on the pesticide label.

  3. Step 3

    Mix the smallest quantity needed to perform a certain task or job area.

  4. Step 4

    Store pesticides prior to mixing them. Once mixed, you must use them, then discard of extra. Give away the excess for immediate use or follow disposal directions on the label.

  5. Step 5

    Triple-rinse or pressure rinse any empty containers once the pesticide has been used.

  6. Step 6

    Refrain from dumping pesticides into streams or ravines. Avoid watering grass immediately after applying pesticides to prevent ground contamination.

  7. Step 7

    Take a shower after mixing and applying pesticides to make sure any excess is washed off your skin.
