How to Know the Rules of Basketball

Men, women and children alike love to dribble the ball, shoot at the basket and run around the court. If you are interested in playing basketball, know the rules before stepping onto the court.

Instructions

    Scoring

  1. Step 1

    Shoot from inside the arc on the court for a 2 point field goal.

  2. Step 2

    Throw the ball from anywhere outside the arc and its' a 3 point field goal.

  3. Step 3

    Be awarded a free throw, worth 1 point, for an unguarded shot from behind the free throw line.

  5. Step 1

    Obtain a better rebound position in basketball by boxing out the opponent. Do this by positioning yourself between an opposing player and the basket.

  6. Step 2

    Dribble the basketball, which according to the rules is the only legal way to get around the court, by bouncing the ball one-handed off the ground using your fingertips.

  7. Step 3

    Pass the basketball by rolling, bouncing, throwing or handing to another player on your team.

  8. Step 4

    Lob the basketball into the net to shoot and score.

  9. Step 5

    Pivot by planting one foot and turning yourself using the other without moving the planted foot. Moving the planted foot is against the rules without dribbling the basketball.

  10. Step 6

    Rebound the ball by recovering it after it bounces off the rim or backboard of the net.

  11. Penalties

  12. Step 1

    Fouls include blocking, charging, hacking and holding. Blocking is keeping a player from moving with any part of your body, charging is running into an opposing player, hacking is hitting the arm or hand of the person holding the ball and holding is simply holding the basketball.

  13. Step 2

    Be careful in the free throw lane, the area under the basket. Do not remain there for more than 3 seconds.

  14. Step 3

    Dribble the ball with both hands, called a double dribble, and you will get a violation, according to the rules of basketball.
