How to Make a Lumber Storage Area

Any woodworker will tell you that having the right lumber on hand for a project is key. An organized space with everything handy is a great way to get those projects done quickly. Use these steps to learn how to make a lumber storage area in your garage or on your property to store all your woodworking essentials.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 x 4 lumber
  • Tape measure
  • Saw
  • Metal connectors
  • 1" wallboard screws
  • Cordless screwdriver
  • Drill w/ 1/4" bit
  • 1-1/2" screw lags

In Your Garage

Step1
Measure the area where the lumber rack will be placed. It must hang higher than your car hood if you park in your garage. You will also need one U-shaped support every 4 feet.
Step2
Cut two legs and one cross brace for each U-shaped support from the 1 x 4 lumber. Make your cross-brace seven inches shorter than the planned width of your storage rack.
Step3
Use metal connectors and wallboard screws to assemble the U-shaped supports.
Step4
Drill pilot holes through each leg and ceiling joint to 1/4 inch. Attach the supports with lag screws. On a finished ceiling you will need to add ceiling plates before attaching the lumber rack to the ceiling.

On Your Property

Step1
Decide on the area you would like to place you lumber storage area on your property. Also, decide if you want the area covered or not. A covered area is preferred as wood needs to be thoroughly dry before using it on any project.
Step2
Split the area in half. Lumber that needs to dry will need to sit vertically and you need to leave ample room for this. The rest of the area should be for shelving or brackets.
Step3
Visit your local hardware or home store to find shelving adequate for holding the different sizes of lumber you wish to store.
Step4
Install shelving according to manufacturer's directions and test for stability before adding lumber to it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear proper safety equipment when working with tools. Ask for help in lifting heavy racks or if you are lifting them at or above head level.
