Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Decide where in your home your fire extinguishers will go. The must-haves are the living space and garage, while the should-haves are the kitchen and near electrical equipment. Ideally, the kitchen should be a must-have. Also, consider putting at least one on each floor, if your house is multi-level.
Step2
Know the size of the rooms where you want to put your fire extinguishers. This will help you choose a unit that covers the area appropriately.
Step3
Visit your local home retailer to take a look at the fire extinguishers offered. While, biggest seems best, don't choose one that is too heavy to handle. In an emergency, you don't want to have to strain to use something too heavy or cumbersome.
Step4
Understand the A:B:C classification system. A is for ordinary combustibles, B is for flammable liquids and C is for electrical. Many fire extinguishers are a combination and can be used for all three types of fires.
