For most people, the closet is the bane of home organization. Clothes go in and never come out, many spending their lives littering the floors. Don't let this happen to you. Follow this simple guide to find yourself on the path to a well organized closet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garbage bags
  • Baskets
  • Shoe racks
  • Hangers
  1. Step 1

Sort through all items in your closet and eliminate any clothes or accessories that have not been worn within the past year. Chances are that if you've made it this long without it, it is either hopelessly out of fashion or no longer fits. Do not hang on to old clothes that are too small in hopes of some day wearing them again.

  2. Step 2

Buy equipment that keeps things organized and off the closet floor. Great examples include double rods, baskets, hooks and high quality hangers. They all work to improve the appearance of spaciousness and organization even if there is very little room in your closet.

  3. Step 3

Get the shoes off the floor. Use over-the-door racks or hanging shoe rods to keep the floors looking nice and uncluttered, and to provide an organized appearance to the entire closet.

  4. Step 4

Arrange clothes and accessories in your closet according to your needs. If you are in a hurry in the mornings to get dressed in career clothing, then place those clothes near the front of the closet. Keep all items in the closet organized in appropriate locations.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hang up clothes right away. Take the few minutes required to put everything in its proper place immediately each day and prevent clutter from piling up--clutter that often ends up on closet floors.
