How to Identify Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Side Effects

The Human Papillomavirus (HPVs) encompass more than 100 different types of the virus that cause warts. There are certain types of HPV that cause special genital warts that can lead to cervical cancer. There are a few ways to prevent the risk of contracting the genital warts. One can refrain from sexual contact, be monogamous or get the vaccine. All vaccines have side effects, as explained below.

1. Watch for side effects that occur immediately, happening within minutes of the vaccination. The immediate side effects will occur if you are allergic to the medicine and not the HPV vaccine itself. If you cannot breath, have a high fever, or feel out of sorts, contact your doctor or go to the emergency room right away. These things can be life threatening.
2. Prepare to see other side effects in the following days after the vaccination. You may feel pain where you received the shot, itching, and redness and swelling in the area. You may have a mild to moderate fever. These minor side effects should only last a couple days to a week.
3. Be aware that the vaccine has side effects after its 4-year expiration date. The vaccine only works on four of the HPV's and the current Merck vaccine only lasts for 4 years. Research is trying to determine if a booster shot is needed.

Tips & Warnings

• There are no known serious side effects to the Merck vaccination. This is the only FDA approved vaccination for HPV.
• Other companies besides Merck are also seeking FDA approval for the HPV vaccine and there are hopes that those vaccines will last longer than Merck's 4-year potency.
