Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Be knowledgeable about the team's beginnings. The Sixers are the oldest NBA franchise. They began as the Nationals in Syracuse, New York. In 1963, they moved to Philadelphia and were renamed the 76ers for the year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Step2
Learn about the championship seasons. As the Syracuse Nationals, the team won the 1956-55 championship. In 1966-67, the Sixers won a national championship thanks to the skills of all-star players such as Wilt Chamberlain and Billy Cummingham. Championship glory came again in 1982-83 behind the play of Julius Erving and Moses Malone, two of the NBA's most renowned players.
Step3
Recall the Charles Barkley years. Sir Charles played for the Sixers for eight seasons before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1992. He was known as much for his entertaining and often controversial behavior and commentary as he was for his skill on the basketball court.
Step4
Get used to some turmoil. Like most teams, the Sixers have had their share of ups and downs. The early to mid-1990s are often referred to as the "Dark Ages" by Sixers fans, as the team's record worsened every year. They had the second-worst record in franchise history in 1995-96. To be a true fan, stick with the team through it all.
Step5
Remember the bright spots. The "Dark Ages" began to improve with the arrival of Allen Iverson, one of the most prolific players in 76ers history. The top pick of the 1996 NBA draft, Iverson was known as "The Answer" and was named the NBA's Rookie of the Year in his first season. He played for the Sixers for ten seasons until his trade to the Denver Nuggets in 2006.
Step6
Attend a game. The Sixers play at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. You can purchase season tickets or single game tickets.
Step7
Purchase Sixers stuff. You can find almost anything with the Philadelphia 76ers logo, from clothing to calendars to alarm clocks. Visit your local sports shop or go to sixers.com to browse the official Sixers store.
