Step 1
Know your fan base. If your band does not have a fan base yet, start performing at "open mic" nights in your town. Play at friends' parties and anywhere you can to establish a small following.
-
Step 2
Research venues online and through word of mouth to find places that your band would like to play. Festivals are a good place for smaller bands to start because of the number of spaces the promoters need to fill.
-
Step 3
Put together a press kit. Include your band's biography, discography, pictures and a demo CD. All of this information should show your band in its best light and clearly express what type of music it plays. Send the press kit to every venue where you hope to book a gig.
-
Step 4
Create a website about the band. Include an electronic press kit. Create a MySpace music page to get more exposure. Put samples of your band's music on the websites.
-
Step 5
Be willing to open for other bands for free. This is the best way to get in front of an audience and start building your own fan base. This exposure will help you to book your band's own gig.
-
Step 6
Network, network network. Booking gigs is a lot about who you know in the music business, so go to conferences and festivals and meet as many people in the business as you can.
