The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the only place where you can become a certified Life Coach. If you are a good listener and enjoy helping people, then becoming a Life Coach is the right career for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Pick a program. The International Coach Federation (ICF) doesn't train you, but you can apply to a school that will. Schools call the course an Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP). There're also a few universities that have an ACTP.
Step2
Establish a support network. Explain what you're doing to your loved ones. This will help them understand what is happening and the possible changes that may occur in your life. It is important to surround yourself with people that encourage and believe in what you're doing. Find people that share an interest in coaching. Join online groups or get together regularly with people in your coaching program.
Step3
Begin to coach others. After you have completed an Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) you can begin coaching. You need a minimum of 75 paid hours and a maximum of 2,250 of paid hours to apply to the International Coach Federation.
Step4
Get references from other certified Life Coaches. Contact other established Life Coaches. They can help you when you are first staring to coach others. They can also serve as a reference when you apply for your certification with the ICF. When you apply for your coaching certification you will need about two references from qualified coaches.
Step5
Apply to ICF for coaching certification. You have to complete an ACTP certification exam and have coaching experience before you can apply to the International Coach Federation (ICF). There is also a fee involved in the certification process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Not all coaching schools are ICF certified; research the program you want to enter well before committing to it.

on 12/15/2007 Good to know about the certification. I have a psychology degree and this was suggested to me rather than going for my masters.
