The sales clerk tells you that you have just purchased reliable virus protection software. A week later, you find a virus on your computer because you didn't update your software. Follow these steps to update your virus protection software and keep the viruses out.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click the software program icon. It is usually located at the bottom right of your task bar. You can move your mouse over the icons to see which one it is. If you cannot find the icon, click "Start" at the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Step 2

Slide to "All Programs." Find your virus protection program. Click the icon to open the program.

  3. Step 3

Look for a button or tab that indicates updates. It is often called updates or live updates. Click this button.

  4. Step 4

Make sure you are connected to the Internet. The anti-virus program will now visit its own website and search for the latest virus definitions.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the program to search the databases. If it finds new viruses, it will send the definitions to your computer. Your computer will load the definitions so that it can protect itself from viruses. The program will tell you how many new definitions it has found and it will inform you when it is done.

  6. Step 6

Close your other programs and scan your computer. Scan your computer each time you get new live updates so that your computer is protected from the latest threats.

  7. Step 7

Choose automatic when you install your virus protection software so that the computer program will update itself each day at a designated time. Use the above method for extra scans or if your computer wasn't on at the designated time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget to keep your virus protection software up to date or you may get a virus.
  • Watch for the expiry date on your software so that you can buy a new program before it runs out.
