Protect your computer from the latest threat by installing virus protection software. You can use free software from the Internet or buy a package at your local computer store. Once you install the software, you need to make sure you are using it correctly. Follow these tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Install the software following the package instructions or use a free version from AVG or your service provider. You can download free versions from the Internet.
Step2
Update your software daily. You can do this by choosing automatic updates during installation or by manually updating your software. If you chose automatic, your program will maintain itself at regular intervals.
Step3
Open your virus program if you want to update the software manually. Click the "Download" or "Live Update" button to download the latest virus definitions. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
Step4
Wait for your definitions to load. The program will tell you when it's finished.
Step5
Scan your computer after new definitions are loaded. You can choose to scan certain drives of your computer or you can choose "full scan." A full scan checks everywhere for hidden viruses.
Step6
Let your program scan the computer. You can use other programs during the scan but they may run slower than usual.
Step7
Read any reports at the end of the scan. Your program should spot any threats and quarantine any viruses. Delete any viruses from the vault.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always back up your computer data.
  • Do not try to open quarantined viruses to see what they are. You might open the virus.
