Shoe odor, or bromhidrosis, is caused by bacteria that live in warm, moist environments. Sandals are usually worn during warm summer months. Feet begin to sweat and bacteria thrive in this environment. This is when sandals start to smell. To make your sandals stop stinking, follow some simple steps to keep your feet clean and free from bacteria.

Spray your sandals and your feet on a daily basis with a foot deodorant that contains zinc oxide. This chemical kills bacteria that causes odor. Another option is to make a spray with 50 percent bleach and 50 percent water to spray on your sandals. Do not spray this directly on your feet. Let the spray dry completely before wearing the shoes.

Wash your feet with soap and water on a daily basis. When you finish washing your feet dry them completely before putting on socks or shoes. Clean, dry feet are less inclined to create odor and bacteria.

Wear open-toed sandals instead of closed ones. Open sandals allow the feet to breathe. If you do wear closed-toe sandals, wear a pair of socks to keep your feet dry and to absorb the sweat.

Buy insoles that keep odor out of the sandals. Odor-eating insoles repel foot odor and keep bacteria from growing. Take the insoles out of the shoes when not in use to allow the insoles to air out.

Line the insides of the sandals with baking soda. Allow the baking soda to sit for a few hours while in the freezer. Remove the shoes and let them sit for a an hour or two before wiping clean.

Spray alcohol on the insides of your shoes. Alcohol absorbs moisture and kills bacteria.
