How to Take a Paternity Home Test

A paternity test is a DNA test that determines if you are the biological father of a child. In-home kits which take an oral sample are easy to use in the privacy of your own home. However, the results of a paternity test are not admissible in court unless done in a licensed and accredited facility. A home paternity test is as accurate as a blood test, but it's used solely for peace of mind.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Order a kit online. It usually comes with tests for the father, mother and child. The test can be completed without a sample from the mother.
Step2
Open the package contain one of the buccal swabs from the end opposite the swab. Pull the swab out and keep the packaging if directed to.
Step3
Rub the swab on the inside of both cheeks and gums of the father. Replace the swab back inside the original packaging if directed to.
Step4
Place the test inside the appropriately labeled envelope.
Step5
Repeat Steps 2 through 4 with the child and, if possible, the mother.
Step6
Send the two or three envelopes containing samples to the testing lab.
Step7
Receive results in about a week. Expedited service may be available for faster results. Results may be available online or via mail, phone or fax.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not touch the swab tip.
  • In-home paternity tests are not admissible in court because a neutral third-party cannot confirm the source of the sample.
  • Residents of New York State cannot order a paternity home test without a doctor's prescription.
