Panic overcomes you whenever you get behind the wheel of a car. In extreme cases, you can't even stand being the passenger. You can eliminate this fear and become a driver. Follow these tips to overcome a driving phobia and reclaim your life.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Identify that you have a driving phobia if your heart races and your palms become sweaty whenever you get behind the wheel.
Step2
Read about driving phobias. Learn what is happening to your body and why.
Step3
Talk to a therapist. Therapists who specialize in anxiety, panic attacks and phobias may have special anti-anxiety techniques to help you gain control.
Step4
Take little steps. You don't have to overcome the driving phobia all at once. Be kind to yourself and reward yourself for little progresses. If all you can do is sit in the car, then do that.
Step5
Imagine yourself driving. The mind is a powerful tool. Believe you can do it and you probably will. Imagine driving to all your favorite places.
Step6
Tell a trusted friend. Ask someone to come with you while you drive. Drive around the block and home again.
Step7
Learn breathing techniques to help you overcome anxiety. Practice the techniques before you get into a car and while you are driving.
Step8
Try hypnosis. Many phobias are overcome by the power of the mind. Check your local phone book for a hypnotist near you.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you feel this anxious at other times of your life, you may have an anxiety disorder which would require different treatment.
  • Don't take sedatives that could affect your ability to drive.
  • Don't let setbacks stop you from trying again.
