Genital herpes affects the male or female genitalia with occasional sores on the genitalia or the anus. Herpes is an incurable disease, but can be treated. If you suspect that you may have genital herpes, you need to get tested.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make an appointment with your physician if you have engaged in sexual activity with a person who has genital herpes.

  2. Step 2

Discuss your symptoms. You may have noticed sores or blisters on and around the genitalia. Also, let the doctor know if you have had any pain or itching at the site.

  3. Step 3

Let the physician take a sample of the blisters. If you are having an outbreak of genital herpes, the doctor can take a culture of one of the blisters and send it to a lab for testing and confirmation of the diagnosis.

  4. Step 4

Get a blood test. If you are not having an outbreak, your doctor can order blood work to test for genital herpes.

  5. Step 5

Go to a clinic for testing if you do not have a doctor. Planned Parenthood offers low cost testing for its patients.

Tips & Warnings
  • During your first herpes outbreak, you may experience flu-like symptoms.
  • Get tested as soon as possible if you suspect that you have genital herpes. You can spread the disease to others including your newborn if you are pregnant.
