Step 1
Prepare to dig out beforehand if you live in an area prone to blizzards. Post an escape plan by each window. Practice escaping so that you're not overwhelmed when you're trapped inside due to a blizzard.
-
Step 2
Escape your home through the upstairs windows if you have a two-story home. More than likely the snow has not accumulated that high, so you can make your escape and begin to dig out after the blizzard subsides.
-
Step 3
Keep a snow shovel inside your house by the front door. This will help you to dig out of your house from the inside without having to look for your shovel first.
-
Step 4
Warm up before you begin digging. Shoveling snow is very strenuous on your heart. Start out slowly and with a smaller shovel so that you are not lifting as much at one time as you dig out from the blizzard.
-
Step 5
Shovel with your legs bent and don't lift with your back. Push the snow as you shovel instead of lifting it high and moving it to prevent injury to your spine.
-
Step 6
Dress warmly when you attempt to dig out. Wear a jacket, boots, scarf, mittens and hat. Although you will be working up a sweat, you can still get frostbite in a short period of time.
-
Step 7
Help your neighbors dig out after a blizzard. They will not be able to dig out themselves if they are elderly or disabled. They can be trapped without food or water if unable to escape themselves.
