Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Ask around in your community and see if anyone is interested. Go to your local community recreational center and see if there are folk groups or singing groups. Talk to the members and see if they are interested in taking it a step further.
Step2
Meet people with wide-ranging political, religious, personal, world peace or other views. Group members who are more educated, opinionated and worldly will make the music sound more personalized and expressive.
Step3
Choose what type of folk music you would like to sing. A ballad tells a story about recent events, while other songs tell stories about work, war or prison. Folk songs can also be classified into spiritual songs, children songs and celebratory folk songs.
Step4
Start practicing once you have a group put together. Find a comfortable place you can practice at least one to two times a week. Focus on building up the lyrics and music together.
Step5
Ask your community or the local event holders if you can perform at certain events. Start small in the beginning to build your folk group's confidence, then move your way up to bigger events.
