Teaching piano can be a great way into either a full time career or to earn extra cash doing something you love. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Piano
  • Variety of sheet music
Step1
Know what you're doing. Some colleges and Universities offer courses and workshops that show how to teach and give advice on methods and materials. Joining a membership group is also a good idea for tips and support.
Step2
Run the numbers. Check there are enough possible students in your area to make it worthwhile and see about the possibility of giving lessons at civic and youth centers, churches and after-school groups.
Step3
Advertise. Create your own website and place an ad in local area phone books. Schools and colleges may also allow you to display information on their notice boards.
Step4
Research the competition. You will be better prepared if you know who you are up against and this will also help you determine how much to charge. Never undersell yourself but don't charge so much that nobody can afford you.
Step5
Stick with it. Starting any business is hard work and can be slow at the beginning. Boost numbers by offering incentives such as a free trial lesson and always ask your students to refer you to anyone else they know who is interested.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give good quality lessons; word of mouth will help your business.
  • Offer specialized classes for both children and adults.
  • Observe other professionals for lesson ideas.
  • Be prepared for pushy parents who think their children are musical geniuses.
