Mackerel are well known for their ability to tire an angler with their bursts of energy and almost endless ability to fight. These cylindrical shaped fish live in the ocean, yet many are caught near land. Prized for their delicious, oily flesh, mackerel make for a very rewarding trophy. Read on to learn how to catch them.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fishing tackle
  • Baitfish or lures

Step1
Determine the area to be fished. Spanish mackerel prefer deep, warmer waters. These sight feeders like clear water and can feed very near shore or miles offshore.
Step2
Collect enough bait for the outing. Most mackerel species enjoy small, live baits with minnows topping the list. Hook the live baitfish through the nose to allow for free movement through the water. Lively baitfish draw a mackerel's attention, and that attention will likely attract many more mackerel.
Step3
Charter a boat or hire a guide for the trip. Guides can pinpoint likely mackerel feeding areas from experience. The charter will have GPS (global positioning system) directions to known fishing spots.
Step4
Select a lure that mackerel can see. Spanish mackerel have excellent eyesight and are fascinated by spoon lures and pink and white color combinations. Tie the lure directly onto the 15-lb. test line as these fish can spot leads and swivels.
Step5
Consider pier fishing to catch mackerel. Float fishing with live bait is effective. Gold lures are popular and need to be "danced" through the water to imitate a fleeing minnow. Keep the line moving all the way to the nearest pier post.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wait until there is a school of baitfish within sight and cast the bait into this school. Draw the lure or bait through the school in a "popping" motion to imitate a wounded baitfish.
  • Carry a good-sized net on any fishing trip. These are invaluable as many fish are lost during retrieval.
  • Wear sunscreen when fishing.
  • Never cast a line when there are people close by. Clear the area to avoid accidental snags.
