Text messaging is one of the most popular features among cell phone users. It's also possible to send text messages to any cell phone number from your computer. All you need to do is register with an online text messaging service, or take advantage of the feature through your wireless provider. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a wireless carrier's site such as Sprint. Sign in if you have an account, or at the bottom right corner of the home page under "Send a Text Message," scroll down to find the recipient's network. If selecting Nextel, enter the 10-digit phone number in the next space, then choose "Go." If you select Sprint, then you will automatically be taken to the next page.

  2. Step 2

Enter the recipient's phone number in the first space under "Compose a Message." Type your message in the second space, making sure that it doesn't exceed 160 characters. Enter your call back number in the next space, then click "Send." The next screen will confirm that your message has been sent.

  3. Step 3

Send a text message from your computer to a phone by visiting an online service such as SMS Everywhere. You may choose a messaging option for a fee, or click "Send a Message to a Cell Phone" for free.

  4. Step 4

Verify the phone recipient's subscriber at the "Send Messages" page. Type the recipient's phone number in the "Send To" field. Next, enter a short message in the "Message" field. The "Characters Used" field will display your message word count.

  5. Step 5

Read the terms of use at SMS Everywhere before sending the message. Click "Send Now" if you agree to the terms of use.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can only send a certain amount of text when sending from a computer to a cell phone. The limit is usually 150 to 160 characters, depending on your phone and service. If you exceed the number of characters, the message will be divided into separate messages.
  • While some providers offer computer-to-phone text messaging for free, others may charge a small fee. Check your service provider's fees and terms of use before sending messages from your computer to another phone.
