Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- A wide variety of visual images for practice
Step1
Gather and use images. Collect images from a variety of sources. There are many free pictures available in magazines, catalogs and online. Incorporate visuals in your current projects, whether for school or for work.
Step2
Read the visual images. Start by examining the whole picture and looking for clues in the picture. Try to answer the who, what, where and when of the image from its clues.
Step3
Interpret the images. Once you can identify the plot, characters and setting of the picture, try to decide what it means. Ask yourself what relationships might exist between the characters and why they are doing what they are doing.
Step4
Create your own images. Draw, paint, use photographs or edit existing photos to create images that correlate with your own work. Then be brave enough to share some of your own images with your friends, family and co-workers.
Step5
Practice. Use every opportunity to read, interpret and use images in your work and your hobbies. Like traditional literacy, visual literacy becomes easier as you practice.
