Fennec foxes are popular exotic pets

Fennec foxes have become very popular pets. Small and active, they are fun to have around the house and make a lively addition to any family. Like any pet, you will need to provide ongoing care and attention for your fennec. The time and money you spend on your new pet, however, will be repaid many times over in love and entertainment. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a veterinarian who is experienced with exotic animals. Because their needs differ from cats and dogs, you will need to work with a vet who is willing to vaccinate and care for your fennec fox.

  2. Step 2

Get an appropriate permit. Many states have strict regulations concerning exotic pets. Learn the rules for your state and make sure you have the paperwork you need to keep your fennec.

  3. Step 3

Provide housing for your fennec. A large (four story) ferret house will work nicely for your fennec fox when you can't watch it. Otherwise, it will be happiest running and playing inside or outside with you.

  4. Step 4

Feed your fennec a healthy diet. Buy high-protein dry dog food to mix with canned cat food and a tablespoon of mixed vegetables for a balanced fennec diet.

  5. Step 5

Play with your fennec every day. These are highly social, very active animals that may enjoy playing catch, chewing on stuffed toys or even chasing strings like a kitten.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure your fennec fox receives the same vaccinations as dog would receive.
  • If you take your fennec outside, it will need to be on a leash or in an enclosure with mesh over the top.
  • Fennecs can be litter trained or paper trained, this makes to keeping them inside, easy.

on 5/18/2009 Mesh over the top? I'm sure they can't jump a twelve foot fence. Er, maybe they can. I hope to be getting one sometime in the future. I'll have to brush up on my knowledge I suppose.-Brent
