Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Determine what size memory stick you need. They come in different gigabytes like two GB or four GB. You probably want to back up your data files as you work on them. Back up regularly. Get in the habit of backing up every day. If you wait until the end of the week, you could lose a whole week's worth of work.
Step2
Understand how the memory stick works. Memory sticks or flash drives are similar to floppy drives. You can save on them, erase them and rewrite on them.
Step3
Insert the end of the memory stick into any USB port in your computer. New computers have them in the front and back.
Step4
Open up the program where your data is stored. For example, you may have text files in Microsoft Word or Excel.
Step5
Click "File" on the menu bar at the top of your screen. Choose "Save As" from the drop down menu. The "Save In" window opens. Click the down arrow right after "Save In" to open a list of locations.
Step6
Choose "Removable Disk" from the list. Name your file in the "File Name" box near the bottom of the window. Click "Save." Your file is now saved on the memory stick. Repeat for each file you want to save.
Step7
Remove the memory stick when you are finished. Put a cap on the end of the stick to protect it.
Step8
Retrieve data from the stick by reinserting it in the USB port and opening your program. Choose "File" from the "Menu Bar" and "Open" from the list.
Step9
Make sure the "Save In" window shows "Removable Disk." Find your file and double-click to open it.

on 9/12/2008 A friend gave me a memory stick with songs stored on it and I don't know how to retrieve the music off of it so my husband can download it onto his iPod. When I plug it into my USB port nothing happens.
