How to Become a Basketball Official

Becoming a licensed basketball official isn't a complicated process and can begin a very rewarding career. It's a great way to stay involved in the game, promote good sportsmanship, stay in shape and make a little money. Good basketball officials are always needed and success at the beginners' level could someday be your ticket to the NBA Finals. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

1. Investigate opportunities with your local YMCA or other youth basketball program. Some will offer informative classes and the chance to officiate games. It's a good way to gain some experience and confidence.

2. Contact your state's high school athletic association and request the forms, rulebooks, and other information you'll need to get your license.

3. Fill out a basketball official application form and send it and the registration fee back to the athletic association. In some states you'll have to attend classes before taking the officiating test. In others you'll simply study the rulebook and take the test when you're ready.

4. Pass the officiating test. This is commonly open-book and most states require a score of at least 75%. After passing the test your name will be placed on the state's officials directory list and you'll be eligible to officiate games in both junior high and high school.

5. Become a member of your local officiating association. While your name is on the state directory list, your local organization will provide you with contacts for officiate games in your area.

6. Attend an annual rules meeting to renew your license. This meeting will cover any rule changes made within the last year. Some states will charge a renewal fee and may require retesting.
