A career as a lighting designer is a fun one, and it is not spent between four walls of an office. A lighting designer may work in theatre, film, television or even live music. It is a job that takes a certain amount of training and skill set. Follow the tips below for becoming a lighting designer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Get involved in theatre. This can begin at any age. Get involved in church programs, children's theatres or local community theatres. Most theatres are eager to accept volunteers of all types. Being involved in theatres will help gain experience, develop a passion for the art and will help attain professional contacts.
Step2
Learn about the other aspects of theatre as well. Lighting designers must know about costumes and scenery to know how they play into the overall production.
Step3
Get as much experience as possible. Volunteer for summer theatre festivals over the summer. Offer your services for local music acts for concerts. Run the spotlight for talent competitions. This is important for developing a portfolio and impressive resume.
Step4
Study art and art history. The best lighting designers are knowledgeable about all aspects of art. Having this knowledge will help with understanding lighting effects and overall composition of color.
Step5
Don't be afraid of heights. Many hours are spent in catwalks and on ladders hanging heavy lighting equipment. Being afraid of heights will definitely hinder a career as a lighting designer.
Step6
Get a degree in production design. Many colleges and universities offer this degree in their theatre program. Get a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Master of Fine Arts. A degree will help give the right knowledge, training, experience and career placement.
Step7
Apply for your dream job as a lighting designer. You are ready for the job.
