How to Caramelize Butternut Squash

Butternut squash is a fall favorite and the perfect accompaniment to the Thanksgiving table. Rich in vitamin A and C, this squash has a rich flavor and pleasing texture. Caramelizing butternut squash is sure to make it a favorite for special occassions, holidays or family dinner. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking sheet
  • Large bowl
  • Large spatula
  • Two medium-sized butternut squash
  1. Step 1

    Preheat the over to 400 degrees F. Wait 15 minutes after the oven preheats before putting the prepared squash in the oven to ensure it's sufficiently hot.

  2. Step 2

    Remove and discard the ends of two medium-sized butternut squash. Peel the squash with a sharp paring knife or a potato peeler. Discard the peels.

  3. Step 3

    Slice each squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds with a spoon and discard. Cut the squash into uniform 1 inch cubes. Collect them in a large bowl.

  4. Step 4

    Melt about 3/4 stick of unsalted butter and pour over the squash cubes. Add a generous handful of light brown sugar, a teaspoon of Kosher salt and a 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper. Toss the ingredients in the bowl with clean hands or a large wooden spoon.

  5. Step 5

    Line the baking sheet with foil, shiny side down. Arrange the coated cubes of squash on the baking sheet.

  6. Step 6

    Roast the squash in the oven for 45-55 minutes. Turn the squash a few times with a large spatula to brown on all sides.

  7. Step 7

    Remove from the oven and cool a bit. Taste and adjust seasonings. Serve hot.
