How to Duplicate a CD

Through overuse or abuse, CD's can wear out. A way to remedy this is to make duplicate copies of the CD's so that originals stay as new. Duplication of CD's is also a great way to back-up the most important CD's that came with the computer, which is very important in case of a system crash. Read on to learn more.

  1. Duplicate a CD with one writeable drive

      Make sure the computer has duplicating software installed. If the computer does not, a user can locate free burning by searching the Internet for "free CD duplicating software." There are also software programs that are more robust but they are not free. Most free software however will get the duplication process done. Also, most burnable drives come loaded with duplication software.

      Insert the CD that needs duplicating into the writeable CD drive bay.

      Open the duplicating software installed on the computer. In this case we will be using Sonic Digital software.

      Locate and select the "copy" option on the duplicating software menu.

      Choose the disk copy or disk duplicate from the "copy" submenu.

      Select the drive letter that contains the CD that is to be duplicated. In the second drive menu, select the same drive that was chosen previously. Once the same drives are both selected click on the start or copy option.

      Remove the CD that is to be duplicated and insert a blank CD. The user will be prompted to insert the blank CD once the writing process is done.

      Check the CD to make sure the duplication process had the necessary effect.

    Duplicate a CD with two writeable drives

      Locate the writeable drive and insert the blank disk.

      Insert the CD that is to be duplicated into a readable drive.

      Open the CD duplicating software and choose the "copy" option from the main menu.

      Select the disk copy from the copy submenu. On the first option, choose the drive bay letter that contains the CD that the user wants to duplicate. On the second drop down menu select the drive bay letter that contains the blank CD.

      Choose the disk copy or start process button.

      Test the CD to make sure it was duplicated successfully.
