Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Several acres of land
- Bass
- Feeder fish such as bluegill
Step1
Determine that you have an adequate amount of land to support a bass pond. This also includes land to produce drainage into your pond. You need at least 5 acres of land for each acre of pond.
Step2
Decide how to fill your pond. If you live in an area with adequate rainfall, this isn't a problem. Otherwise, you might look for natural springs or wells as a source of water.
Step3
Meet with local zoning authorities to get approval to build a pond. Also, visit with your local extension agents. They can give you advice on pond building and how to stock bass.
Step4
Finance your pond. There may be local, state or federal monies available for your use.
Step5
Design the pond with the bass in mind. Build places for them that mimic their natural habitats.
Step6
Build the pond. Unless you own a bulldozer, you must hire a professional to do this. You must have clay in the soil for the dam to hold water. Find out if your soil has enough clay before you start to build. Hauling in clay is expensive.
Step7
Stock your pond once you have enough water in it. Put in plenty of feeder fish for the bass. Bluegill is a common food. Figure ten bluegill for every bass you put in the pond. You may use other feeder fish as well.
