How to Write an Essay Introduction

Write an essay to persuade a reader to share your view or opinion on a certain topic. An essay should have three main parts: an introduction, a body and a conclusion. All components are important, but an introduction catches the reader's attention and introduces the topic as well as conveys the writer's feelings on the matter. Use the tips below when writing an introduction to an essay.

Instructions

    • 1

Capture the reader's attention. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways depending on the topic of the essay. Use a startling fact, some interesting information or a personal note. If writing about the AIDS epidemic in Africa, then state how many people die each year from the disease. If writing about having a dog as a pet, then begin with statement about how much you love your dog.

    • 2

State your thesis statement clearly. This is usually done in the last sentence of the introductory paragraph. The thesis statement should be one statement summing up what the subject of the essay is. If it can't be said in one sentence, it is probably not a specific enough topic on which to write an essay.

    • 3

Begin the introductory paragraph generally, and then get more specific with each sentence. This is called funneling. The first sentence should be a general statement, while the last sentence, or thesis statement, should be the specific topic in which your essay addresses.

    • 4

Introduce the entire essay in the introductory paragraph. This is done in the thesis statement. In one sentence, make the thesis statement and use the supporting evidence which will be used in each paragraph. For instance, state that everyone should have a dog because they are easy to care for, they protect your home and they are good companions.
