Most women desire a natural vaginal birth at some point, and many do even after having a c-section. If you plan to try a vaginal birth after a cesarean (VBAC), there are certain things that you need to do to give yourself the best possible chance of delivering vaginally. With a little bit of preparation and understand, you and your doctor can plan a successful VBAC. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Do your homework. If you plan to have a VBAC, you need to do some research beforehand. Read up on the subject to educate yourself about the risks and benefits associated with this sort of delivery. VBACS are most successful in women who have had uncomplicated lower transverse uterine incisions.
Step2
Talk to your doctor. The most important partner you can have when planning a VBAC is your doctor. Discuss your desire to deliver naturally, and listen to what he has to say. If he feels that you'd be better off having a repeat c-section instead, you may need to rethink your options.
Step3
Write up a birth plan. A birth plan is a road map for how you want your labor to progress. It's important that both your family and the medical facility have a copy of your birth plan, and be prepared to adjust it should unforeseen circumstances arise.
Step4
Prepare yourself mentally and physically for a vaginal delivery. Especially with a VBAC, it's important that you prepare yourself for the delivery. Stay in shape by exercising throughout your pregnancy and watching your weight gain carefully. Attend labor and delivery classes to prepare mentally for the task at hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's important to discuss the risks and complications of your particular medical case with your doctor.
  • Regardless of the outcome, a healthy baby is the most important part about your delivery. If you need to have a repeat c-section, remember that the end justifies the means.
