Step 1
Speak to your gynecologist about getting an IUD. She will discuss the risks associated with this method and go over other birth control options with you.
-
Step 2
Get a pelvic exam. Before you can get an IUD, your doctor needs to perform a pelvic exam. This is done to make sure that you are healthy and have not contracted an infection or sexually transmitted disease.
-
Step 3
Have the IUD inserted. A doctor places the IUD into your uterus with a string leading down to your vagina. The IUD can stay in place for several years depending on the type that your doctor uses.
-
Step 4
Schedule a follow up visit. The doctor needs to examine the IUD to ensure that it has stayed in place. He'll also ask you if you have had any bleeding or cramping since the IUD was inserted.
-
Step 5
Use condoms if necessary. Although an IUD will protect you against pregnancy, you are still at risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease.
