If you need a mask for a costume party or you're just looking for some rainy day fun, try paper mache. It can be a little messy, but it's so simple even young kids can do it. Making a mask is a fun way to test your creativity and it's a great family craft project. Sketch some ideas on paper first, and then break out the paper mache and let the fun begin.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Tear newspaper into strips about an inch wide and six or seven inches long and set aside.
Step2
Inflate a 12 inch balloon with air and tie closed. Blow it up to the size you want based on how large the mask needs to be to fit on your face.
Step3
Cover a large cup or mug with plastic wrap and then set the balloon on top of it. The cup will act as a base to hold your balloon while you work on it and the plastic wrap will keep the balloon from sticking to the cup once you apply the paper mache.
Step4
Make your paper mache paste by mixing one part flour with two parts of water until it develops a consistency of thick glue. Stir well to get out all the lumps and add additional flour or water if necessary.
Step5
Dip the newspaper strips in the paper mache mixture and apply one at a time to the balloon. Cover only one side of the balloon with a layer of paper mache and be sure to leave holes for the eyes. Once dry apply a second layer and let dry completely.
Step6
Add features like a nose, ears, warts or thick eyebrows using foil and securing with masking tape. Then apply a final layer of paper mache strips and let it dry.
Step7
Pop the balloon and make a hole in each side of the mask using a hole punch. Run a piece of elastic cord through the holes and tie in a knot at each end to secure. Then paint your mask as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix your paper mache paste in a disposable bowl to help make clean up easy.
