How to Research to Locate Absentee Real Estate Owners

Absentee real estate is common for those with vacation homes or travelers. Locating the owners of those properties, however, can be quite difficult. Use these steps to learn more about absentee real estate and how to locate owners who don't live on the property.

Instructions

    • 1

An absentee real estate owner is simply someone who owns a piece of property and lives somewhere else. This is usually a rental situation, vacation homes or commercial buildings.

    • 2

Contact the inhabitants of the building or property. They will be your closest link to the absentee real estate owner. The inhabitants may rent directly from the owner or may rent the building or property through a managing agent or management company.

    • 3

Follow up on the information given to you. If the inhabitants know the owner and offered you contact information, follow it. If they gave you the name of a realtor or property management company, call them, introduce yourself and explain why you are trying to contact the owner.

    • 4

Wait for a response. Getting a hold of absentee real estate owners can take some time. They may live in another town, another state or another country. Be patient.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are a real estate investor include absentee real estate owners in your list along with foreclosures. They may be waiting for someone like you to come take the property off their hands.

  • Many real estate offices have tips on how to contact absentee owners or may be able to assist you in the process. Contact one of your local realtors, as they will also be familiar with the property.
