Step 1
Purchase any necessary equipment. Running shoes, as well as goggles are necessary for the event. There is equipment that can help in reducing times, such as a triathlon suit, or wetsuit, which eliminates the need to change clothing at transition.
-
Step 2
Work out a training schedule. Make sure there is enough time in the day to train for the event. Vary the days spent on each sport. Not only does this prevent boredom, it also gives alternating muscle groups a chance to rest. Days off, usually about two a week, are necessary also.
-
Step 3
Practice transitions. Run to swim and swim to run, or just one if that's the case in the race. Getting running shoes on after swimming isn't easy, and pulling goggles on after a run isn't either. Practice so that it becomes easier.
-
Step 4
Find a race. Go ahead and sign up for the event. This is a great motivator to continue training. Some events fill up quickly, so this is good practice anyway to reserve a spot.
-
Step 5
Train hard. Nothing prepares an athlete more for race day than training hard. A good rule of thumb in training for sports is to do 1.5 times the distance of the competition in practice. So if the swim is 1000 yards, do 1500 in practice.
