How to Prepare for a Root Canal

A root canal is the process when a dentist treats the inner part of a tooth where nerves have degenerated. This area is known as the pulp or nerve tissue. A root canal involves the removal of any bacteria present, as well as the nerve and the products created by its breakdown. Then the hollow area is filled and sealed. Root canals are usually no more painful than a filling.

Instructions

1. Ask the dentist any questions beforehand. Make sure it is understood what will be done and how long it will take. Any questions regarding insurance coverage and cost should be covered beforehand also. Prepare questions at home and call the office later if necessary.

2. Find out if there's any medication to be avoided the day of the procedure. Blood thinners are usually off-limits. Whatever medications aren't permitted can usually be taken after the procedure.

3. Note any medications that the dentist recommends taking to prepare for the procedure. Some dentists suggest taking ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain reliever before the procedure. There is usually slight discomfort following dental procedures, and the over-the-counter medicines alleviate the pain.

4. Tell the dentist if there are any phobias regarding dental procedures. Dentists can prescribe medication to relax a patient that has serious problems with dental work. In this is the case, it makes it easier for the dentist and patient to get the dental work done. Make sure to ask if driving is allowed following taking these medications.

5. Relax. Root canals are routine procedures. Dentists do them almost every day.
