Traveling abroad is fun and exciting. The last thing you want to think about is staying safe. However, an unexpected mishap can ruin your dream trip. While you can't guarantee that you won't face problems while traveling abroad, you can take steps to protect your safety.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Passport
  • Photocopy of your passport
  • Important phone numbers
Step1
Bring important information and phone numbers so you are prepared for potential problems. Write down the phone number for your credit card company, bank and traveler's check provider. Also note the address and phone number of the local United States Embassy. Make a copy of your passport, since it will facilitate the replacement process if your passport is lost or stolen.
Step2
Do not invite trouble. Leave valuable jewelry at home, and wear clothing that doesn't stand out. Be alert for pickpockets, especially in subways and high traffic tourist areas. If you encounter a problem with someone, don't argue--apologize and walk away.
Step3
Be polite and respect the local culture. Research the local customs and laws before you leave home. Learn any actions that may offend the people who live in your destination country and avoid using them. Seeing other lifestyles is part of the fun of traveling.
Step4
Mind your money. Carry small amounts of cash. Bring travelers checks or use the ATM machines. Most major cities and towns abroad have ATM machines, so inquire at your local bank.
Step5
Stay away from areas that are not safe. Ask the hotel staff which parts of town to avoid during the day and at night.
Step6
Protect your security. When using a calling card at a public telephone, block the keypad so others can't see. Thieves steal calling card numbers in busy areas such as airports and train stations. Be careful when using an ATM machine, and be alert to people who stand very close as you enter your PIN number.

Tips & Warnings

  • Learn a few words in the local language such as hello, please, thank you and goodbye. The residents will appreciate your efforts.
  • Consider registering with the United States Embassy. If there is a local disaster, the embassy will make an effort to locate you and provide assistance. For more information, visit the United States Department of State website.
  • Leave a detailed copy of your itinerary with a family member at home. Include your airline name, flight number, travel dates, hotel name, address and phone number.
  • Females traveling alone should take extra care to protect their safety. Avoid going out alone after dark. Be alert when getting into a taxi and only use legitimate transportation companies.
  • Don't expect people from other countries to think and act the same as Americans.
